A Great Story Set You will find that these books provide a fast paced journey with fantastic creatures, characters and plot development. There is a good flow to the writing and it will keep you turning pages whether you're 15 or 25. The polarization of reviews to be found are religious in backing. You won't find a one star rating from someone based on the story or the prose, but on their distaste for any themes they find against their own dogma. The story does attack tyranny and religious domination. A snippet from the book: "I met an angel: a female angel.. She said that all the history of human life has been a struggle between wisdom and stupidity. She and the rebel angels, the followers of wisdom, have always tried to open minds; the Authority and his churches have always tried to keep them closed." Its really a sum of that; independence and critical thought over suppression, dogma and dominion. Lyra and Will are the two heroes of the series. Each has an instrument that provides them some fantastic power. The books are filled with parallel worlds and various other entities borrowed from theoretical physics. If you are looking for science fiction and fantasy mixed stories in marvelous settings with plots to keep you jumping, this is a good bet.
Anti-Buddhist Propaganda!! Phillip Pullman obviously hates Buddha, who meditated for our sins, as none of the characters meditate or are of Asian heritage. He also teaches children that animals can talk and be your friend in addition to other vile, evil, atheistic drivel. When I took my son to the zoo two weeks ago, he tried climbing into the polar bear exhibit to visit with Lorek the Armored Bear. I blame the attempted actions of my son on the fact the Phillip Pullman hates God and Children and would love nothing more than to see children eaten alive by polar bears under the false guise of friendship. Well Mr. Pullman I hope your children are eaten by Polar bears and then you'll realize that had you seen the truth of Buddha's teaching that you would have realized how irresponsible your actions truly were. Pullman also attempts to trick the readers by cleverly disguising the true nature of the spirit animals by using the very archaic and esoteric spelling of the word "Daemons". However, if you observe very carefully, by removing the letter "A" from this spelling, you will discover that the word is in actuality the word "DEMONS"!!! Yes that's right, Demons, those horrible things that live under that ground and eat children (much the same way as Polar Bears, do you see the pattern Pullman is creating?). My point is that unless you want to be endlessly reincarnated by failing to become enlightened by the Grace of Buddha, in addition to having your children eaten by zoo animals and Demons (not Daemons, nice try Pullman!!) DO NOT BUY THESE BOOKS.
